Compulsory vaccination for Care Home staff in England: everything you need to know

From 11th November 2021, anyone working or volunteering in a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered care home in England must have two doses of an authorised COVID-19 vaccine unless they have a medical exemption.

As a Nurse, Carer, or Support Worker this changes how you book shifts through reach24.

Here are some key dates to bear in mind:

  1. 16th September is the last date for having your first dose so that you are fully vaccinated by the time regulations come into force.
  2. 11th November is the last date you can have your second dose before the regulations start.

Vaccinations can be booked online through the nhs.uk/grab-a-jab or by ringing 119. It is also possible to visit one of the hundreds of walk-in centres across the country without the need to book in advance.

For a small number of people, vaccination may not be appropriate due to clinical reasons. In this case, you will be able to seek a clinically approved medical exemption.  Exemptions for vaccination can be found in the COVID-19: the green book, chapter 14a. Currently, guidance on what evidence you will need to provide if you are exempt is under development.

In the meanwhile, if you are still unsure of taking the vaccine it’s important that you make an informed decision fast. Check out this guide from the NHS.

After the 11th of November 2021, you will be unable to work in the social care sector in England (care homes) unless you can provide evidence that you have had both vaccines. The new guidelines for working in care homes in England can be found here.

This means that you will be unable to book shifts via reach24 until you provide evidence of vaccination or proof of exemption.

How can I demonstrate my vaccination status

We are no longer accepting paper appointment cards.
If you’ve been vaccinated by the NHS in England, you can show us your COVID-19 vaccination records using the NHS COVID Pass service in the following three ways:
• The NHS App
• The NHS website – NHS.uk
• The NHS COVID pass letter

You’ll need to send us a screenshot or photo of any of the above as your evidence.

Reach24 is here to help!

If you have any more questions about the new laws and how they might affect you, please drop us a message using the chat button in the bottom right corner of your screen. Alternatively, email us or get in touch with a member of our team on 02035002024.
